Castlevania: Belmont's Curse Double Jump and Movement Abilities

Double Jump is the last of Rose's five movement abilities, and it arrives later than many Metroidvania players expect. You do not find it in a chest or buy it from a shop. It is unlocked after a specific boss fight deep in Dracula's Castle, once a chain of earlier abilities is in place. This page explains that chain, the exact unlock steps and where the second jump pays off.

Where Double Jump comes from

Double Jump is unlocked by defeating Death in Notre-Dame, then reaching a tutorial door in the Choir. Several guides agree on this, including TheGamer, allthings.how and the community wiki. It is the fifth and final movement ability, so expect it well into the second half of the game.

There is an earlier meeting with Death in the Catacombs of Paris, but that one does not count. The Catacombs fight ends on a story cutscene whatever you do, and you cannot absorb his card there. Only the Notre-Dame battle grants his power and opens the Double Jump tutorial.

Every movement ability in order

Each movement ability comes from a boss whose Arcana Rose absorbs. The order below follows TheGamer's movement guide and the KeenGamer walkthrough. Knowing it helps you judge how close you are to the second jump.

Holy LightThe Warrior (Joan of Arc), Prison TowerDispels rocky platforms and can counter attacks

Aerial Rush is the closest substitute for a second jump before Notre-Dame. It extends your horizontal reach, while Arcane Whip hooks cover many vertical gaps. Plenty of ledges that look like Double Jump checks can be reached with those two tools combined, so try them before marking a spot for later.

Step by step: how to unlock Double Jump

The path to Death has several requirements, and missing one is the usual reason players get stuck. Work through the list in order. Each step depends on the one before it.

  1. Defeat The Builder in the Clock Tower to earn Smash.
  2. Defeat The Occultist at the top of the Library and collect Brauner's Paintbrush.
  3. Obtain The Artist Arcana (Masterpiece) from Brauner's Atelier.
  4. Equip The Artist and use the Notre-Dame painting in the Gallery of Eternal Night.
  5. Collect three Melody Sheets and play them on the Great Organ to clear the corrupted pipes.
  6. Defeat Death in the Transept and hold R1 (E on PC) to absorb The Shadow.
  7. Go to the glowing yellow door in the Choir, where Leon explains Double Jump.

The organ puzzle is the step most guides spend the most time on. The three sheets are the Fugue, the Sonata and the Concerto of Notre-Dame, each held by a spirit. Our Notre-Dame guide lists where each spirit waits and how the zodiac floor keys work.

How to perform it

Jump once, then press jump again while Rose is still in the air. On PlayStation the prompt reads "press cross in mid-air to perform a double jump", and the jump button on other platforms works the same way. The tutorial right after the door asks you to reach a high ledge above a spike pit.

Timing matters more than speed. Pressing the second jump near the top of the first arc gives the most height, while pressing it early helps you change direction. Combine it with Aerial Rush for long horizontal crossings, using the dash after the second jump rather than before it.

Arcane Whip still matters after you have Double Jump. Some hooks hang above gaps that are too wide even for two jumps and a dash. Treat the three tools as one kit and you will rarely meet a ledge you cannot reach.

Where Double Jump opens new paths

The first use is right in the Choir, and Notre-Dame itself has several high ledges that only open after the fight. The wiki lists 33 districts in the cathedral, so a second sweep there is worthwhile. Heart fragments, ATK books and Experience Statues are spread across those rooms.

Back in Paris and the lower castle, revisit the spots you marked as too high. Exploration guides note that many secret areas sit behind ledges just out of reach of a single jump. Our hidden rooms guide and secrets guide are good places to start a return trip.

The story route continues to the Heart of the Clock and a second fight with Isaac after Notre-Dame. Double Jump makes that stretch easier, though no guide we checked calls it a strict requirement for that route. Pick up anything you skipped on the way there, since the final areas are close behind.

Movement abilities in combat

The movement skills are not only for exploration. Holy Light can counter attacks when timed well, which makes it a defensive tool in boss fights as well as a way to clear rocky platforms. Arcane Whip can also hook enemies, not just anchors, so it doubles as a way to close distance quickly.

Double Jump changes how you handle ground attacks. Wide sweeps and floor shockwaves that once forced a dodge can now be cleared with a second jump. It also lets you reposition above a boss after a combo, then come down with Smash if the fight allows it.

Practice these combinations against regular enemies before relying on them in a hard fight. The difficulty guide explains how the settings change damage and pressure. On higher settings, a well-timed second jump often saves more health than any relic.

Why it comes so late

Many Metroidvanias give the double jump in the first third of the game. Belmont's Curse builds its early traversal around the whip instead, which fits a Belmont hero. Reviewers singled out whip-based movement as one of the game's strongest ideas.

Holding back the second jump also keeps the early map tight. Paris and the castle are designed around hooks, dashes and breakable blocks before vertical freedom arrives. When Double Jump finally lands, it works as a reward that reopens the whole map for completionists.

If you are still early in the game, focus on the bosses that grant Arcane Whip, Holy Light and Smash first. Our abilities guide explains every Arcana card, and the walkthrough shows the boss order. With that order in mind, Double Jump is a clear goal rather than a mystery.

Common reasons you do not have it yet

  • You only fought Death in the Catacombs, which is scripted and grants nothing.
  • The Artist is collected but not equipped, so the painting does not react.
  • One Melody Sheet is missing, so the Transept stays blocked.
  • You left the Choir before walking through the glowing yellow door.

If you have beaten Death and still cannot jump twice, return to the Choir. The tutorial door is what actually grants the skill, and leaving the area early can skip it. Check your skill list afterward to confirm Double Jump appears there.

Patches can also change small details after launch, since the game only came out on October 15, 2026. If a step here no longer matches what you see, compare it with the latest community walkthroughs listed in the sources. We update this page when a guide or patch note confirms a change to the unlock route.
