Castlevania: Belmont's Curse — The Fallen Boss Guide

The Fallen is the first major boss in Belmont's Curse and the first real test of Rose's dodge timing. He guards the way forward in the Paris underground and has two distinct phases. Beating him grants Rose her first Arcana and the Arcane Whip, the ability that shapes the whole early game. This guide covers his attacks, a safe strategy, the rewards and the story twist he carries.

Where you fight The Fallen

The fight comes early, at the end of a mostly linear opening stretch in Paris. Story summaries describe Rose heading into the underground reservoir and sewers, where an enchanted doorway blocks the path. The Fallen intercepts her there and attacks.

The community wiki lists the card location as the Gate to the Catacombs in the Paris Streets. Other sources place the encounter in the sewers, so the room naming differs slightly between guides. Either way, you cannot miss it, because the main route runs straight through his arena.

Two clues in the Paris Streets point toward him before the fight. "A Monster terrorizes Paris" sits on the Path of the Rat, and "A Lever for the Well" is in the Ruined Market. Read both, because the lever opens the way down.

How to prepare

NoobFeed recommends going in with at least three Health Vials. You will not have many tools yet, so the fight is mostly about movement and reading his wind-ups. Explore the opening streets first to pick up any extra healing and a better weapon if you find one.

His health is not refilled when the second phase begins. That means any damage you deal in phase one carries over directly. Play the first half slowly and safely rather than racing, since the second half is where most damage is taken.

Your starting kit matters less than your positioning. Keep some distance at the start so you can see which attack he picks, then commit only after it ends. A cautious first attempt that teaches you the patterns is worth more than a rushed win.

Phase one: Claw Combo and Unholy Cross

In the first phase, The Fallen has two main attacks. Both are readable once you know the timing. Learn them here, because they stay in his move set when phase two begins.

AttackWhat it looks likeHow to answer
Claw ComboHe leaps in and throws a three-hit swipe chainDodge forward through him during the first two slashes, then dodge again as he turns for the third
Unholy CrossA spinning cross flies forward, turns and returns like a boomerangHit the cross with a melee strike to break it, then close in

Dodging through the Claw Combo is safer than trying to parry it. After you slip behind him, he spins to aim the third slash, so dodge through once more before you attack. If you miss the cross and it flies past, wait until it returns and vanishes before you approach.

Phase two: the whip attacks

At half health, a short cutscene plays and The Fallen adds two whip attacks. This is the phase that catches most players off guard. The new moves cover far more of the arena than his claws. Expect to spend most of your healing here.

Whip Strike is a long yellow lash that reaches almost the whole room. Running away usually fails, and a hit binds Rose for guaranteed damage. The answer is to dodge forward, under the whip, as he winds up.

Whip Swing has him swing from the ceiling and dip low near the corners. Stand near a corner to bait the dive, then walk toward the centre as he comes down. When he lands, step in and land a heavy combo while he recovers.

Common mistakes in this fight

  • Backing away from Whip Strike instead of dodging forward under it.
  • Attacking after the second claw slash and getting caught by the turning third hit.
  • Chasing him while the Unholy Cross is still on its return path.
  • Using Health Vials during his recovery window instead of attacking.

Most failed attempts come from greed rather than a lack of damage. Each of his attacks leaves a clear opening, but only after it fully ends. Wait for that moment, land two or three hits and get ready to dodge again.

If you keep losing in phase two, practice only the whip dodge for a few attempts. Once forward dodges under the lash feel natural, the rest of the fight is the same as phase one. Most players need only a few tries to clear him this way.

Rewards: The Fallen Arcana and Arcane Whip

Defeating The Fallen purifies his soul into one of the Tarot cards Sypha gave Rose. The card grants the Holy Cross spell and teaches the Arcane Whip skill. KeenGamer's walkthrough also lists The Fallen's Key, one of the keys needed later at the Catacombs gate.

RewardDetails
Holy Cross (spell)50 MP; throws a cross that returns after a set distance or on hitting a wall
Arcane Whip (skill)Aim with the stick and press whip to hook glowing anchors or enemies
The Fallen's KeyOne of three keys used to open the Catacombs gate

Arcane Whip is the first of five movement abilities and opens many early shortcuts. Holy Cross also gains Gifts later, such as a second cross and mana returned when you catch it. Our abilities guide and Double Jump guide explain how the rest of the kit builds on it.

Works of Mercy for The Fallen card

Each Arcana card has Works of Mercy, small objectives that earn a Blessing. For The Fallen, the wiki lists three of them. They are easy to finish during normal play if you know what to aim for.

  • Find three different whip-type weapons.
  • Kill five enemies with the same cross, not necessarily at once.
  • Kill ten enemies with a whip attack.

The whip-weapon task finishes naturally later, because Vampire Killer is one of the whips you pick up. The cross task is easiest in rooms with weak, grouped enemies. Check your card screen now and then to see how close you are. Each Blessing is a separate reward, so the tasks are worth chasing on every card.

Spoiler: who The Fallen really is

The Fallen is later revealed to be Leon Belmont, the founder of the Belmont line from Castlevania: Lament of Innocence. Story summaries say Dracula cursed him with an extended life after their final meeting and bound him to his will. By defeating him and using the Tarot cards, Rose frees his mind and gives him peace.

That is why Leon returns later as a guide rather than an enemy. In Notre-Dame, for example, he is the one who explains Double Jump to Rose. Our story guide covers how Leon, Trevor and Rose fit into the Belmont family history.

What comes after The Fallen

The next major bosses are Medusa in the Holy Innocents' Cemetery and Joan of Arc at the Prison Tower. Each grants another Arcana and one of the keys for the Catacombs gate. Joan's card also unlocks Holy Light, your second movement ability.

If The Fallen felt hard, consider the difficulty settings before moving on. Later bosses add more screen-filling attacks, though dodging forward through strikes stays useful. See our bosses guide for the full order and the difficulty guide for the options.

Right after the fight, try Arcane Whip on the glowing anchors near the arena. The route ahead uses hooks to cross gaps that were impossible before. Mark any anchors you cannot reach yet, because later abilities extend where the whip can take you.
