Castlevania: Belmont's Curse Story and the Belmont Family

Castlevania: Belmont's Curse is set in Paris in 1499, 23 years after Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse. Its hero is Rose Belmont, the daughter of Trevor Belmont and Sypha Belnades, who carries Dracula's curse in her right arm. She inherits a whip and a family duty that trace back four centuries to Leon Belmont, the clan's founder in Lament of Innocence, although the new game does not feature Leon himself.

The setting: Paris in 1499

The game opens with creatures emerging from the shadows to attack medieval Paris. A bishop summons Trevor Belmont to deal with the crisis, and the city's burning streets, catacombs and a looming castle become the map you explore. Konami's announcement framed it as a direct continuation of the Belmont story rather than a reboot.

The year matters because it places the game after both Castlevania III, set in 1476, and Curse of Darkness, set in 1479. Dracula was defeated by Trevor's party in 1476, so the attack on Paris raises the question of who is behind it. The early game answers part of that question through its first boss.

Paris is a new stage for the series, which usually centers on Dracula's castle in Transylvania. Moving the story to a real European capital lets the game mix gothic horror with historical figures such as Joan of Arc. The castle still appears, but the city itself is the main hub you return to as new paths open.

Who is Rose Belmont?

Rose is Trevor Belmont's daughter and the playable protagonist, voiced by Abby Trott. Her mother is Sypha Belnades, the sorceress who fought beside Trevor in Castlevania III, and who died shortly after Rose was born. Trevor reveals during the story setup that he is not the last Belmont.

Rose's defining trait is the curse she inherited from Dracula, which marks her right arm. The curse lets her cast spells, turning a mark of the enemy into a weapon. That gives the game a protagonist whose power comes from the very creature her family exists to fight.

In gameplay terms, the curse replaces the classic sub-weapons. Instead of axes and holy water, Rose uses tarot cards and Arcana drawn from defeated bosses. Our abilities guide explains how those Arcana work.

The Fallen and the tarot souls

The first major enemy is The Fallen, a monster that pursues Rose's soul and serves as the demo's final boss. When she defeats it, its soul is purified and sealed into a tarot card. It then reveals that it serves an unknown master and that two other guardians hold the remaining keys.

That structure drives the story forward: each guardian holds a key that opens new areas of the map. Nintendo World Report highlighted Rose's conversations with the souls she captures as a source of humor and charm. Game Informer called the tarot investigations the best part of the game, especially the late hunts for the final cards.

Because each guardian guards progress, the boss order also shapes how the story unfolds. Reviewers praised the variety of those fights, from a possessed golem to a teleporting enemy that tests your grappling. Our bosses page lists the confirmed boss names without spoiling the late game.

Leon Belmont and the origin of the Vampire Killer

Leon Belmont is the founder of the Belmont clan's vampire-hunting line. He is the protagonist of Castlevania: Lament of Innocence, released on PlayStation 2 in 2003 and set in 1094, the earliest point in the series timeline. In that game he searches a vampire's castle for his kidnapped betrothed, Sara.

Lament of Innocence explains where the family whip comes from. The alchemist Rinaldo Gandolfi gives Leon the Whip of Alchemy, and Sara's sacrifice turns it into the Vampire Killer. The same game reveals that Leon's friend Mathias Cronqvist later becomes Dracula, which starts the centuries-long feud.

Belmont's Curse does not feature Leon, and no official material links him directly to Rose's story. The connection is the inheritance: Rose wields the holy whip Vampire Killer that Leon forged four hundred years earlier. Searches for Leon Belmont alongside this game usually come from fans tracing that lineage.

Where Belmont's Curse sits in the Castlevania timeline

The series timeline spans centuries of Belmont hunters, each facing Dracula or his servants. Belmont's Curse fills a gap between the Trevor era and later Belmonts such as Simon. The table below shows the entries closest to Rose's story.

Year in storyGameBelmont hero
1094Lament of Innocence (2003)Leon Belmont
1476Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse (1989)Trevor Belmont
1479Curse of Darkness (2005)Hector, with Trevor's story as background
1499Belmont's Curse (2026)Rose Belmont
1691Castlevania (1986)Simon Belmont

The game is the 26th main entry in the franchise and was released in its 40th anniversary year. You do not need to have played the older games to follow the story. Knowing Castlevania III helps with the Trevor and Sypha references, but the opening explains the essentials.

The supporting cast

Trevor Belmont returns, voiced by JB Blanc, and Sypha Belnades appears with Alejandra Reynoso in the role. Graham McTavish voices Dracula, and Liam O'Brien plays Isaac. Ray Chase voices The Fallen.

The wider cast mixes series regulars with historical figures. Erica Lindbeck voices Joan of Arc, Dawn M. Bennett plays Carmilla, Melique Berger plays Medusa and Aaron LaPlante plays Death. Graham McTavish also voiced Dracula in the Netflix animated series, and Game Informer even argued that the game works better as a sequel to that show than to Castlevania III.

Do you need to play the older games first?

No earlier game is required to follow Rose's story. The opening introduces Trevor, explains the curse and sets up the guardians without assuming prior knowledge. Returning fans will simply catch more of the references to Sypha, Alucard and Dracula.

If you want background, Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse is the most useful game to know, because it introduces Trevor and Sypha. Lament of Innocence matters only if you want the origin of the Vampire Killer and the Belmont feud. The Netflix series covers a looser version of the Trevor and Sypha story and is the quickest primer for newcomers.

The game's costumes also nod to that history. The Midnight Edition includes Trevor-style and Sypha-style outfits, and the pre-order bonus is an Alucard-style costume. Those three characters were the heroes of Castlevania III, so the extras double as a small tribute to Rose's family.

What critics said about the story

Reviewers generally liked Rose more than the plot around her. Game Informer described the narrative as not particularly complex while praising standout moments in Rose's character arc. TheGamer singled out an engaging story as one of the game's strengths.

RPG Site enjoyed the premise of Rose overcoming other people's doubts about her. Nintendo World Report called her a compelling character in her own right. Taken together, the reviews suggest the story is a solid frame for the exploration rather than the main reason to play.

How the story ends: three endings

The story has three endings, according to the trophy list: a bad ending, a normal ending and a true ending. Their trophy names are Belmont's fall, The hunt goes on and Curse lifted. The last name strongly suggests the true ending resolves Rose's curse.

This page avoids ending spoilers beyond those names. The endings guide and true ending page cover what is confirmed about each outcome. Reaching all three is required for the Platinum trophy and full completion.
